CRYO-SCULPTING

Summary

Cryosculting is a cosmetic treatment that removes excess fat in stubborn areas. It works by freezing fat cells, killing and breaking them down in the process. Fat cells are more affected by cold temperatures than other cells. This means that the cold does not damage other cells, such as the skin or underlying tissue.

During the procedure, the practitioner vacuums the skin above the area of fatty tissue into an applicator that cools the fat cells. The cold temperatures numb the site, and some people report feeling a cooling sensation.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as percutaneous collagen induction, is a minimally invasive procedure that involves superficial controlled puncturing of the skin at a set depth with fine needles that create channels in the skin. It is a 30-60 minute office visit and a topical anesthetic is used.

The results: is smoother, firmer, and younger-looking skin.

Microneedling has been used to treat a wide variety of conditions including:

What happens during microneedling?

Our team cleans your skin and applies a numbing cream or ointment, such as lidocaine cream. They do this about 15 minutes before your procedure, so the ointment has time to work.

Next, we use an electric tool (MD Pen) to make the wounds in your skin. The electric pen has tiny needles. Then we roll it slowly and gently across your skin. The needles pulse up and down to puncture your skin. We can change the length of the needles on the electric pen device. Longer needles go deeper into your skin, which might be necessary if you have deep scars or pockmarks from acne. Needle lengths can range from 0.5 millimeters to 2 millimeters.

You might feel warmth or a scratching sensation on your face once the microneedling starts. Some people feel discomfort if the needles are near bony areas, such as your forehead. Deep microneedling might cause a little bleeding.

A microneedling procedure can take anywhere from 30 minutes to few hours, depending on the size of the area that needs treatment.

Side Effects:

After the procedure, the skin may be red and flushed in appearance, similar to moderate sunburn. In the treatment area, skin tightness and mild sensitivity may also be experienced.

BOTULINUM TOXIN

What is botulinum toxin for facial wrinkles?

The first signs of aging are often wrinkles around your eyes, forehead, cheeks, and lips. Wrinkles are a normal feature of the human face. But many people feel wrinkles make them look tired or older.

To reduce the appearance of wrinkles, some people choose to have injections (shots) of botulinum toxin. These injections are often called by their brand names, such as Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin® or Jeuveau™. The injections relax certain muscles in the face, and certain wrinkles become less noticeable for a period of time.

Dynamic wrinkles are caused by facial muscles that move when you smile, laugh, and squint. These are often around the lips, on the forehead and between the eyebrows. They are also the “crows’ feet” at the corner of your eyelids. Everyone is born with dynamic wrinkles. As you age, these wrinkles get deeper and easier to see. Botulinum toxin can be used to make these dynamic wrinkles less noticeable.

Very fine lines and wrinkles are formed when collagen in the skin starts to thin. Collagen is protein just beneath and within deep skin layers. Aging and sun damage cause collagen thinning. It makes the skin on your face stretch and sag, creating fine wrinkles. Botulinum toxin does not erase wrinkles, but it could smooth them. However, there are other ways to reduce their appearance.

How does botulinum toxin (Botox) work?

Botulinum toxin is produced by a specific type of bacteria. In higher amounts, it can be poisonous. However, only small, weaker doses of botulinum toxin are used to reduce facial wrinkles.

When botulinum toxin is injected, it blocks certain nerve signals that make muscles contract. The muscles relax, reducing unwanted wrinkles. This effect lasts about 3–6 months. After that, the muscles move again, and wrinkles come back.

When you have botulinum toxin injected, we reduce the discomfort with a vibration bed and a vibration tool on the injection site. Then we will inject the medicine into specific facial muscles. This only takes a few minutes.

Within the first week of your treatment, you should notice your muscles begin to relax and fewer facial lines and wrinkles. This effect wears off in about 3–6 months.

While botulinum toxin injections may help, they sometimes cause side effects or other health problems. Common side effects include:

• Headache.
• Eye redness, tearing, or irritation.
• Redness or bruising in the injection area. This is more likely to happen if you take aspirin or blood-thinning medicine.
• Drinking alcohol 24 hours before treatment also increases redness and bruising.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal filler injections are a type of nonsurgical cosmetic procedure. Dermal fillers plump up wrinkles, smooth lines and restore volume in your face. It injects these substances just under your skin.

People choose to get dermal fillers to enhance their facial features or gain a more youthful appearance. This elective treatment usually takes less than half an hour, and recovery time is minimal. Results are seen right away and last months to years depending on the type of filler and the location.

There are several kinds of dermal fillers. Your healthcare provider will discuss your options with you. As with any cosmetic procedure, there are risks, including infection, bleeding and bruising. Health insurance plans generally don’t cover elective cosmetic procedures such as filler injections.

What are the types of dermal fillers?

There are many types of dermal fillers. In addition to “off-the-shelf” fillers that use synthetic (manmade materials) and substances that naturally occur in your body, healthcare providers can use fat from your own body. Healthcare providers call this procedure “autologous fat grafting,” where they remove fat from one part of your body and inject it into your face.

The types of off-the-shelf fillers include:

• Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring acid in your skin. It gives your skin volume and keeps it hydrated. With age, your body stops making hyaluronic acid. Results from HA injections usually last six months to a year. Restylane® or Juvederm®, Revanesse® is a commonly used type of HA filler.

• Calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) is a type of filler that consists of a substance you have in your bones. Results from these fillers typically last around a year. It usually use CaHA fillers for deeper wrinkles. Examples of CaHA fillers include Radiesse®.

• Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is a substance that helps your body create its own collagen. It usually uses poly-L-lactic acid to smooth deep wrinkles on your face. The results can last two years or more. Types of PLLA fillers include Sculptra®.

• Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) fillers consist of collagen and very small balls that stay under your skin after been injected. The balls give your skin volume and keep it firm. Bellafill® is one type of PMMA filler.

What happens before a dermal filler procedure?

Before you get dermal fillers, you’ll have a consultation. We’ll examine your face and ask about your goals and what areas you’d like to enhance.

We may mark your face with a pen or marker to show where the injections will be. They may also take pictures of your face.

During this consultation, we will also ask about your medical history. It’s important to tell us if you’re taking any medications, as some drugs can increase the risk of complications after getting fillers.

Tell us if you have:

• Allergies.
• History of bruising or bleeding after similar procedures.
• Neurological problems.
• Skin conditions.

What happens during a dermal filler procedure?

We clean your skin and may apply a lotion or cream with an anesthetic. The anesthetic numbs the area so the treatment will be more comfortable.

Using a thin needle, we inject small amounts of fillers under your skin. The needle will pinch or sting, but most people don’t experience much pain during these injections. We may inject the fillers in several areas. The whole process can take a few minutes or up to an hour.

What happens after a dermal filler procedure?

After receiving dermal filler injections, we will cleanse your skin. We may give you an ice pack to ease pain and swelling.

You may have bruises, swelling or discomfort after getting the injections. Usually, these side effects are mild and go away in a few days.

Many people see results right away after getting these injections. But everyone’s results are different. How long it takes to see results (and how long they last) depends on several factors.

CHEMICAL PEELS

Summary

A chemical peel is a technique used to improve the appearance of the skin on the face, neck or hands. A chemical solution is applied to the skin that causes it to exfoliate and eventually peel off. The new, regenerated skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin. The new skin is also temporarily more sensitive to the sun. There are three basic types of chemical peels. Superficial, médium , deep.

What can I expect after having a chemical peel?

All peels require some follow-up care:

• Superficial peels require one to seven days to heal. Treated skin will initially be red and may scale. Lotion or cream should be applied until the skin heals, followed by daily use of sunscreen. Makeup can usually be worn the next day.

• Medium peels require seven to 14 days to heal. Treated skin will initially be red and swollen. Swelling worsens for the first 48 hours. Eyelids may swell shut. Blisters may form and break. Skin crusts and peels off in seven to 14 days. Skin must be soaked daily for a specified period, followed by ointment application. Antiviral medication is taken for 10 to 14 days. Mild lotion or cream may be applied. Avoid all sun exposure until healing is complete. Camouflage makeup may be worn after five to seven days. A follow-up appointment will be necessary to monitor progress.

• Deep peels require 14 to 21 days to heal. The treated area will be bandaged. Skin must be soaked four to six times daily, followed by ointment application for the first 14 days. Afterwards a thick moisturizer is applied for the next 14 days. Mild lotion or cream may be applied. Avoid all sun exposure for three to six months. Camouflage makeup may be worn after 14 days. Several follow-up appointments will be necessary to monitor progress.

PRE-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

1. Two weeks prior to treatment, discontinue using all alpha hydroxyl acid products (those containing glycolic or lactic acid), salicylic acid products, retinoids (Retin A, Renova, Differin, and Tazorac) and other topical acne medications such as benzoyl peroxide. If in doubt about using any product, please discontinue it and discuss with us at your appointment. No antibiotics and/or any photosensitive medications may be used during the time of treatment.

2. Shave the treatment area 1 or 2 days before laser hair removal.

3. Laser treatments are not recommended for tanned patients until the tan has faded. Sun exposure must be avoided between treatments for a minimum of three weeks before treatments. This includes sun exposure and tanning booths. Artificial tanning products must be discontinued two weeks prior to treatments. Always use a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher throughout the course of your laser treatments.

4. Do not pluck, wax, or tweeze hairs lasered throughout the course of your laser treatments.

5. Patients with a history of herpes should be take an oral antiviral medication (Zovirax or Famvir) the day before treatment. Laser heat can trigger and/or reactivate the virus in the same way as sun, stress, and fever. Consult with your physician if you need a prescription.

6. At the time of treatment, laser protective glasses MUST be worn.

7. If consuming any hormone stimulating or anti-depression medication, client MUST notify Technician prior to treatment.

 POST-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

1. No DIRECT Sun Exposure or Tanning three weeks after laser treatment. Always use a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher with ZINC oxide.

2. Extra hygiene care at home may be required.

3. DO NOT pluck, wax, or tweeze hairs being treated with laser.

4. Redness and swelling of the follicles/tissue may appear and can remain for 15 minutes up to few hours.

5. To reduce swelling, application of Hydrocortisone 1% or an antibiotic cream.

6. If scabbing, pustules, or follicle inflammation appear, apply Hydrocortisone 1% or an antibiotic cream such as Neosporin or Polypore for 2-3 days after the treatment and contact our office immediately.

7. DO NOT PICK SCABS for proper healing of the skin.

8. When treating facial area: Make up MUST be removed and can be used day after the treatment.

9. DO NOT TOUCH, RUB, and SCRATCH OR PICK the treated area.

10. Complete hair clearance can take 10-20 days after laser procedure.

Laser Hair Removal FAQs

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Lasers use electric pulses and light to target hair follicles and destroy hair at the roots. Because the lasers target the darker pigment of the hair, the lighter skin surrounding the hair is not affected. By destroying the hair in the follicle, future hair growth becomes inhibited.

How Many Laser Hair Removal Treatments Are Needed?

In the natural hair growth cycle, some hairs are dormant while others are actively growing. Because of this staggered growth cycle, patients do need multiple sessions to target each hair in its “active” stage. The number of treatments required varies for different patients depending on the amount and type of hair and the area being treated. Most patients will need four to six treatments at four to six-week intervals.

Is Laser Hair Removal Painful?

Patients may experience some mild discomfort during the laser hair removal procedure. Most patients compare this feeling to a rubber band snap. This sensation generally fades soon after the procedure. After the treatment, a few patients report mild itching, redness, or swelling in the treated area, which should subside after a few days.

What Happens After Laser Hair Removal?

There is no downtime following laser hair removal. Patients are able to go about their day immediately after the treatment. Hair will start to fall out during or directly after the treatment, which should continue for roughly 21 days. Patients should avoid direct sun exposure for two weeks following the treatment and should refrain from waxing and/or tweezing while they are undergoing laser hair removal treatments.

Who Are The Best Candidates For Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal can be performed on patients with any skin color or hair type. However, because the laser targets melanin in the hair follicle, dark hair is treated most effectively. Red, blond, and gray hair are not as easy to treat.

IPL (INTENSE PULSE LIGHT)

Summary

IPL uses a technology called intense pulsed light to rejuvenate the skin. It helps decrease the appearance of wrinkles by stimulating the collagen in the skin. It can lighten marks due to hyperpigmentation, sunspots, and age spots. Patients who are struggling with rosacea and similar skin conditions may see an improvement after an IPL treatment. The technology behind IPL is also used in hair removal procedures.

WHAT SKIN CONDITIONS ARE TREATABLE WITH AN IPL LASER FACIAL?

Skin conditions that are successfully treated with an IPL laser facial include age spots, freckles, sun spots, liver spots, pigmented acne scars, birthmarks, superficial skin wrinkling, fine spider veins (broken capillaries), diffuse redness associated with Rosacea, cherry angiomas, and even active acne reduction. You will also notice improvement of skin texture and tone.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

Our team will assess your skin and review your medical history to determine if an IPL laser facial is right for you. Some patients start their first laser facial treatment on the same day as their initial consultation. The treatment typically takes about 15 – 30 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated. Typically, from 4 – 8 treatments are required for optimal results. Treatments can be done every 4-8 weeks.

Immediate after-effects, if any, are minor. They may include redness and swelling, which disappear in a short time. The darkened pigmented lesions will remain on the skin for approximately 1-2 weeks until they flake off. After each treatment, patients are usually able to return immediately to their daily activities. Make-up can be applied to the skin to cover the darkened lesions.

LASER FACIAL (IPL) FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

What is the difference between an IPL laser facial treatment and laser skin resurfacing?

An IPL (intense pulsed light) device is more color specific, targeting pigmented spots and blood vessels, leaving the surrounding skin essentially intact and untreated. Whether CO2 or erbium, skin resurfacing lasers target the water content in the skin, and thus treats both pigmented and normal skin cells.

Does IPL laser treatment hurt?

This treatment has discomfort. Some patients do require topical numbing prior to treatment.

What should I expect after an IPL laser facial treatment?

After treatment, the brown spots and sun damage that was targeted will darken for approximately 1-2 weeks before flaking off. Patients are able to apply make-up to the area to cover the dark spots. There is no post-treatment care, however, it is recommended to avoid significant sun exposure and Retin-A use for 1 week after treatment.

How should I prepare for a laser facial treatment?

Avoid tanning or significant sun exposure of the areas to be treated. Tanning decrease the color difference between the pigmented areas and the surrounding skin, making the treatment potentially more challenging, less safe, and less effective. Also avoid the use of photosensitizing medications (such as tetracycline or doxycycline) before a treatment, as this may exaggerate the skin response to treatment. It is also recommended to discontinue skin care products (such as Retin-A or Salicylic Acid) one week prior to treatment as this may make your skin more sensitive to the treatment.

Other than the face, what parts of the body can be treated with IPL?

The treatment can be performed on any area of the body. The most common areas are those most exposed to the damaging effects of sunlight. Other than the face, the most popular areas are the neck, hands, chest, and shoulders.

Are there any areas that should not be treated?

IPL treatments should be avoided in hair bearing areas of the face in men, since the treatment may also lead to unintended permanent hair reduction. In these areas, fractionated resurfacing would be a much better and safer alternative.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of laser facial (intense pulsed light) treatments depends on the area treated and the severity of sun damage. Typically, 5-8 treatments are required, although patients with more extensive pigmentation may require more treatments.

How soon should I expect results?

Most patients start to see some results after the first treatment. While many patients see great results after the first session, it still takes 2-4 treatments to obtain the results you desire.

Can I use a spray-on tan between treatments?

You should refrain from any tanning or self-tanner products during treatment. The lighter the skin in comparison to the color of the pigmentation, the more effective the light is at targeting the pigment. Tanning of the skin can cause unwanted side effects to occur as well.

How does PRP Injection Therapy works?

Prior to treatment a blood sample is taken from the patient. This blood is immediately placed in the centrifuge which spins the blood and separates it into layers. The concentrated platelets (PRP) are extracted from the buffy coat layer for use in the treatment. The platelets are injected into the deep dermis or fat layer of the skin. The platelets will then gradually increase collagen formation which can increase skin thickness and overall health and function of the skin.

What to expect during treatment?

A small amount of blood is collected. The area to be treated with the PRP is pre-treated with laser, microneedling or other procedure if desired. The platelets are injected in using a fine needle and with minimal discomfort.

Summary

Kybella is a solution that is injected directly into the adipose (fat) tissue of the neck to destroy and dissolve fat cells. Each treatment lasts approximately 15 minutes.
