The dark line that runs from the navel down. The patch around the belly button that thickened after your second pregnancy. The fine layer of stomach hair that you notice in two-piece swimsuit photos and then cannot un-see. Abdomen hair is one of the most under-discussed concerns we treat at ABL Med Spa, partly because nobody wants to bring it up at the dermatologist, partly because the hair pattern itself is often hormonal and waxing only makes it angrier. Laser hair removal targets the follicle directly, so the result is reduction over time rather than a clean shave every other day. Sessions run 20 to 30 minutes. A planned series of 6 to 8 visits gets most clients to maintenance, with hormonal hair patterns needing a couple of extra visits to reach the same place.
What makes our abdomen LHR different
Abdomen hair is rarely uniform. You usually have one or two zones with coarser, darker hair (the linea alba running from navel to bikini line, the patch around the belly button itself, sometimes a small ring above the navel) mixed with broader areas of fine vellus hair across the rest of the stomach. A single-setting treatment either burns through the soft hair without clearing the dense patches or wastes pulses on follicles the laser cannot resolve. Our providers zone the abdomen and run different settings across each zone, with overlap mapped against the previous visit.
We work on two devices for a reason. The Diode handles Fitzpatrick I through III at the speed and cooling needed to treat the abdomen comfortably. The Clarity II covers Fitzpatrick IV through VI safely, including the deeper skin tones where the abdomen tends to flush more easily. If your skin tone shifts over the year (especially common for clients who tan in summer), we change devices instead of dropping energy below what the follicle needs.
The other thing that matters for abdomen work: hormonal context. If your abdomen hair pattern is being driven by PCOS, perimenopause, postpartum hormone shifts, or thyroid issues, we factor that into both the expected number of sessions and the cadence between them. We will tell you straight at the consult whether laser alone is going to give you the result you want, or whether pairing it with a conversation with your endocrinologist or OB-GYN will speed up the outcome. Hormonal hair grows back faster than ordinary hair, so the maintenance phase looks different than it does for someone treating cosmetic stomach fuzz.
What to expect at your abdomen session
The day before your appointment, shave the entire treatment zone from the bottom of the ribcage to the top of the bikini line. Both vertically and across the full width of the stomach. Around the navel, take your time and skip anything that breaks the skin. If you miss a spot, we will trim it for you when you arrive, no extra charge.
At your appointment, you will lie on your back on a heated table with your top folded up and your waistband folded down (or change into a gown if you prefer). Your provider will outline the treatment area with a white pencil and check in on any sun exposure, new medications, or skin changes since your last visit. If you are pregnant or trying to conceive, mention it now: we postpone laser during pregnancy and the early postpartum window.
The treatment itself is steady. Sapphire-cooled handpieces press lightly against the skin, the laser fires in overlapping passes, and you will feel a series of warm snaps. Most clients describe it as a rubber band flick followed by a cool spot. The skin directly around the navel and along the linea alba is the most sensitive; the outer abdomen is the easiest. If you want a numbing cream applied beforehand, mention it when you book and we will set it on 30 minutes before your slot.
From start to finish, plan on 20 to 30 minutes in the room. You will walk out with the area slightly pink, which fades in under an hour. You can drive yourself home, return to work, and put high-waisted pants on the same day.
Aftercare for abdomen LHR
For the first 24 hours, skip hot showers, the sauna, hot yoga, and any workout that is going to flush the skin. Cool to lukewarm water and a fragrance-free moisturizer is the entire protocol on day one. Aloe is fine if you have a piece going.
For the first 48 hours, the abdomen has to stay covered or coated in mineral SPF 50 if you are going outside in a crop top or swimsuit. The follicles are reactive after treatment, and pigment changes from a bad sunburn in this window can stick around longer than the burn itself. We are stricter about sun than other providers in the area because the data is on our side, and a careful series will outperform a sloppy one every time, especially on the abdomen which pigments easily.
Around days 7 to 14, you will see what looks like new hair pushing through. It is not new growth. The laser has disrupted the follicle and the hair shaft is being shed from below. A gentle exfoliation in the shower speeds this up. The stomach may feel patchy for about a week, then smooths out.
Between sessions, the only allowed hair removal method on the treated zone is shaving. Waxing, sugaring, threading, and plucking pull the follicle out of the cycle the laser needs to hit. If you wax between sessions, the next appointment cannot do anything meaningful and you essentially pay for a placeholder. Shave as often as needed, including the day of your next visit.
