How Botox Treats Pain (Not Just Wrinkles)
Botox was originally developed for medical conditions. Its cosmetic use came later.
When injected into the jaw muscles (masseter and temporalis), Botox blocks the nerve signals that cause these muscles to clench involuntarily. The muscle relaxes gradually. Not completely, but enough to break the cycle of tension, clenching, and pain.
This is the same mechanism the FDA recognized when approving Botox for chronic migraines in 2010. For TMJ and jaw tension, the treatment targets the specific muscles responsible for grinding and clenching.

Conditions We Treat with Therapeutic Botox
TMJ Disorders (TMD)
Jaw pain, difficulty chewing, facial soreness, and limited jaw movement. Botox relaxes the overworked masseter muscle, reducing pressure on the temporomandibular joint and providing lasting relief from TMJ pain.
Chronic Migraines
If you experience 15 or more headache days per month, you may qualify for Botox migraine treatment. Injections target specific trigger points around the head and neck to reduce migraine frequency and severity.
Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)
Nighttime grinding wears down teeth, causes jaw pain, and disrupts sleep. Botox weakens the clenching force without affecting your ability to chew normally, protecting your teeth and jaw while you sleep.
Tension Headaches
That constant band of pressure around your forehead often originates from jaw and temple muscle tension. Therapeutic Botox breaks the tension cycle at the source, providing relief that over-the-counter medications can’t match.

Custom Treatment Plan
Your provider maps the injection sites based on your specific pain pattern. TMJ patients typically need 20-40 units per side in the masseter muscle.
Quick Treatment (10-15 Minutes)
The injections themselves take just minutes. Most patients describe the sensation as a small pinch. No anesthesia needed, and you can drive yourself home.
Results Build Over 7-14 Days
Botox takes time to fully relax the targeted muscles. Most patients notice improvement within a week, with full results by two weeks.
Ongoing Relief (Every 3-6 Months)
Effects last 3-6 months. Many patients find that with consistent treatment, they need fewer units over time as the muscles retrain.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is therapeutic Botox different from cosmetic Botox?
It’s the same product, but the injection sites and goals are different. Cosmetic Botox targets expression lines on the forehead and around the eyes. Therapeutic Botox targets the jaw muscles (masseter and temporalis) to relieve pain and reduce involuntary clenching. The technique and dosing require specific expertise in facial pain anatomy.
Does it hurt?
Most patients describe the injections as a small pinch. The needles used are very fine, and the treatment area is relatively low-sensitivity. The entire process takes 10-15 minutes, and most patients say it’s far less uncomfortable than the jaw pain they came in with.
Will I still be able to chew normally?
Yes. Therapeutic Botox reduces the force of involuntary clenching, but it doesn’t paralyze the jaw muscle. You’ll still chew, talk, and smile normally. The goal is to bring the muscle back to a healthy tension level. It does not eliminate the muscle’s function.
How long until I feel relief?
Most patients notice a reduction in jaw tension within 5-7 days, with full results by 10-14 days. The relief typically lasts 3-6 months. Many patients find that with regular treatments, the effects last longer over time.
Can I get reimbursed by insurance for TMJ Botox?
ABL Med Spa does not bill insurance directly. However, some patients have successfully pursued reimbursement on their own. Call us at (512) 721-0274 to learn more about your options.
Can I get cosmetic Botox at the same appointment?
Absolutely. Many patients who come in for TMJ treatment also address forehead lines or crow’s feet in the same session. Your provider can discuss both therapeutic and cosmetic options during your consultation.
