If you have already done your homework on chin filler, you have probably seen two product families come up: hyaluronic acid and Radiesse. They both add projection. They do it in very different ways, and they age very differently on a face.
Radiesse is a calcium-based filler made of tiny calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres suspended in a gel carrier. The immediate result is the volume from the gel. The longer-term result is the collagen your own body builds around those microspheres over the months that follow. Translation: you get a firm, structural projection on day one, and you keep building that structure quietly over the next year.
For clients who want the longest-lasting and most sculpted chin result we offer, this is usually the right choice. For clients who want flexibility and the option to dissolve, our Chin Enhancement with Hyaluronic Acid page is the better read.
What makes chin Radiesse at ABL different
The product itself is FDA-cleared and well-studied. What changes between providers is how it is used. A few specifics about how we approach it:
- Profile-led mapping. Gaby takes front and side photos at the consult and marks placement against your specific bone structure, not a template. Radiesse is firmer and less forgiving than HA, so accurate first-time placement matters.
- Deeper, structural placement. Radiesse sits in a deep plane on the chin, against the periosteum (the lining over the bone). Placed correctly, it integrates into the bony framework of the face and reads as projection, not as a bump.
- Conservative dosing, build over time. Most first-time chin Radiesse sessions are 1 syringe. The product expands slightly as collagen forms around it, so the result at two weeks looks different than the result at three months. We plan for that, and we would rather see you back than overcorrect.
- Physician-supervised. Dr. Eric Guy is the medical oversight on every injectable visit at ABL. Radiesse, because it is not reversible, deserves an extra layer of careful planning. Both Gaby and Dr. Guy review the plan with you at the consult.
What to expect at your chin Radiesse session
Your first visit is a free 20-minute consultation. Gaby reviews your face at rest and in motion, asks about your goals and timeline, takes profile photos, and talks through whether Radiesse or HA is the better fit for what you want.
If Radiesse is the right choice, treatment can usually happen on the same visit if the schedule allows. Many clients prefer to take a day or two to think it over, which is fine.
On treatment day:
- Numbing cream goes on for 15 to 20 minutes. Radiesse does not have lidocaine pre-mixed, so Gaby will also mix a small amount of lidocaine into the syringe before injection for added comfort.
- The injections are placed in a deep plane against the chin bone. There are usually 3 to 5 entry points, and a cannula option is available for clients who bruise easily.
- The whole treatment takes 25 to 35 minutes.
- Most clients describe a pressure feeling, with one or two short, sharper moments when the product reaches the bone. That sensation is brief.
- You will see immediate projection. Radiesse looks slightly fuller on day one because of mild swelling and water retention in the gel carrier. The “true” result settles in over 2 to 4 weeks.
- Most clients walk out, drive home, and return to normal activities the same day.
Your two-week follow-up is part of the price. Because Radiesse continues to integrate over months, we also recommend a visit at 8 to 12 weeks to assess the collagen-driven result.
Aftercare for chin Radiesse
Aftercare is similar to HA filler with a few Radiesse-specific notes:
- First 24 hours: avoid pressure on the chin. Skip resting your chin on your hand, holding a phone with your shoulder, sleeping face down, and dental work for a few days.
- First 24 to 48 hours: no strenuous exercise, no saunas, no hot yoga. Heat increases swelling.
- First 24 hours: no alcohol if you can avoid it. Alcohol thins the blood and makes bruising more likely.
- Light massage at 2 weeks (only if we ask you to). In rare cases of a small palpable nodule, gentle massage during the first few weeks can help smooth the product. Wait for Gaby’s instruction before doing this.
- Bruising help: arnica gel and a cool (not iced) compress. Avoid NSAIDs for the first 24 hours unless you take them daily.
- Two-week and 8-to-12-week follow-ups: the first to check settling, the second to see how the collagen-driven part of the result is shaping up.
Call or text the office at (512) 721-0274 if you notice anything unusual, like a section of skin that feels cold, looks pale, or develops a sharp persistent pain. We pick up on weekends for issues like this.
